Na Kupuna Ukulele Club
The Na Kupuna Ukulele Club of Chicago was founded in 1997 by a group of Hawiian-born folks who now reside in the Chicago area. The club was created as a way to have fun while bringing the warmth of Hawaii to the mainland. "Na Kupuna" means "elder" in Hawaiian, as many members are seniors.
Pono co-founders Paul Maeda and Lauren Okura both have ties to the club through family and friends, including Lauren's grandmother who was one of the foundering members. Her grandfather would make hand-made posters and decor to use at the clubs events. Lauren created the font for the logo from the original poster lettering made by her grandfather. The club used the logo to create their signature t-shirts, and Lauren and Paul built a website so that family, friends, and fans could find information and a bit of history around this amazing cultural ukulele club.
